The “Mysore Style” of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is named after the city in India where this style of yoga was started by the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. New students begin the practice by learning the sun salutations and a few of the initial standing postures. As the sequence becomes committed to memory and ease is achieved in the postures, additional postures are added. All students begin with the primary series or “yoga chikitsa” which means yoga therapy. In this practice the body is healed, strengthened and prepared for deeper yoga practice both physical and meditative. Because the “Mysore Style” is taught in an individualistic manner, adjustments and modifications are provided to help the student progress in the safest and most appropriate way. Students are encouraged to practice at home to further engrain the sequence into the DNA of the body and mind.
Ashtanga yoga is a form of physical activity that almost anyone can enjoy. For individuals looking to perform a relaxing form of exercise that improves mobility and core strength, try it out.
