Life, and Maintaining Perspective PDF Print E-mail

Three months ago my wife and I were fortunate enough to become the parents of a wonderful baby boy. For about a month I continued to try to operate as I had previously, while also trying to be a relatively full-time parent. As my level of frustration and stress increased as I made an attempt to juggle everything that I "thought" needed to get done I started to evaluate the various aspects of my life. I made the decision that being a parent was the number one priority and that I would take a break from this website until my son didn't require non-stop attention. After three months, that time seems to have come. I will resume posting articles on various topics pertaining to the maximization of life.

Everyday is an opportunity to learn and grow as a person. Even though I seemed to have learned the lesson of prioritizing in my life I know I will continue to be challenged with this concept going forward. The most important thing for me is to maintain perspective and reduce the stressors in my life as much as possible. Use my recent example as an opportunity to reexamine your own life and see if there are things that could be changed to increase your happiness and reduce unwanted and unneeded stress.

Stress can be experienced in many forms. Our culture is bombarded with stressors that are physical, chemical, electromagnetic, mental, nutritional, and thermal. There is the old adage “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” This may be true, but in other cases it can unfortunately be very inaccurate. Hans Seyle was one of the first to scientifically investigate the concepts of stress and its impact on physiology. While the majority of his work was completed in a lab on animals his General Adaption Syndrome can easily be applied to humans.

I think everyone should know how to cook there own food. Even for the seasoned cook coming up with interesting recipes can be challenging. That is usually where cookbooks come into play. They can teach you some new techniques and some recipes to go along with them. Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking is one such cookbook. If you have ever been interested in molecular gastronomy this book may be for you. That is if you feel like spending $625 on a cookbook. Not to mention the cooking equipment costs to make those recipes costs thousands of dollars. I'll stick with the Joy of Cooking and Nourishing Traditions as my go to cookbooks for making simple, healthy, and tasty meals.
