When compiling equipment for a home gym there are a few factors to consider. First, you want to address the utility of the equipment. It is important that the equipment you purchase have multiple uses. This will minimize the amount of equipment you need to make space for. Second, as just mentioned, space can be an issue, so each piece of equipment should take up as little as possible. Third, price can be an issue. The typical individual doesn't have the same budget that large corporate fitness facilities have, so the more you can minimize unnecessary costs the better.

In my opinion, the piece of equipment that best fits the above criteria is a set of PowerBlocks. They are dumbbells that provide you the ability to change weights using the same set. Depending on the set you get it is possible to have dumbbells that range in weight from 2.5 lbs. all the way up to 130 lbs. in a single pair. This is an extreme range that should fit almost everyone's needs. If you were to go into a typical gym the same range of weights using single pairs may take up 50 feet of wall space and cost a few thousand dollars.

Resistance training is built around the concept of progressive overload. Overtime it is important to gradually increase the weight of an exercise as your muscles adapt. Dumbbells allow you to add a load to almost any exercise. Combine that with the variability that PowerBlocks provide and you have an integral part of any home gym.
